The Perfectionist’s Guide for Back To School

Are you a Perfectionist? Aka Supermom? aka Over-Functioner?

Want to do Back to School Differently this year?

YES, we see you, and we are talking to YOU!

We’re here, friends. It’s the end of summer. Real life is on the horizon. Want to keep your summer reconnection vibe a little longer this year? Here are some ways that you can try to protect yourself from yourself and your old ways of instantly building stress back into your life.

You feel better, a little more happy and calm, and then here it goes again- that internal dialogue about how you ‘should ‘ feel guilty that you aren’t doing everything and that you had a little sliver of breathing room. You know what that sets up….the space for the judger to come in and make you feel like you ‘should’ be doing more, you ‘should’ be more productive, you ‘should’ help in all the things that are needed at your school or your kids classroom.

But, there is this little nagging voice saying…

“…but you are finally relaxed and more emotionally available with your family. You are actually enjoying the flow of your life…you are having those little moments of connection with your kids, your partner, your friends…life feels better.”

Then there is the other voice saying…

”you aren’t DOING enough. You need to get more done- cook more, organize more, clean more, volunteer more, help at school…MORE…MORE…MORE”.

Part of you knows how long it took to settle into summer and actually let go a little, but the other part of you is sitting back in judgment of how much more productive you usually are and there is a emotional HIGH to that…so which are we going to choose?

Will we choose the reason that we chose to have a family and what we want to be like for them and find ways to connect and nurture ourselves so that we can nurture them…or are we going to once again move away from ourselves and our souls to rejoin the manic pace of disconnection and exhaustion?

What lessons have you learned this summer about what you need and how to relax and reconnect to yourself a little more?

Is that still small voice trying to help you do it differently this year and actually be happy and DO less in order to actually have space for connection to yourself and your family? We all know that the bandwidth for true connection takes real energy and intention.

If you want this year to be different, here are some ideas on how stay aligned with your soul and spirit to remain grounded and connected while moving into the school year.

  1. Set intentions about how to spend your time. Choose 2 areas that you want to prioritize.
  2. Stay attuned to yourself – remember that your wellbeing is the anchor to the family’s wellbeing. If you aren’t able to be present, who can? You are important to care for. What do YOU personally need to stay grounded without judgement?
  3. Understand your nervous system and how to keep it managed – catch the whispers of disconnection and dysregulation before the scream that is harder to recover from. Pay attention to the signals in your body and thoughts that you are getting pulled away from yourself. Learn techniques to tune in and reground (I can help you with that!)
  4. Pause, and do not say yes to anything right away – It is the season for lots of asks and demands to start filling your time. We can only do so much and reserve time and space for emotional bandwidth. Buy yourself time when someone asks you to volunteer for a role and graciously say, “Oh, how interesting, let me think about that- I appreciate you wanting me to be involved”. You can validate the connection while not having to take it all on.

If you know that you want a different experience of this school year, reach out to help yourself stay connected to yourself and learn more techniques for setting intentions, connecting to your internal world, and quieting the judger inside.
