What Is Polyvagal Theory? A Guide to How Your Nervous System Responds to Stress

Have you ever noticed how your body seems to “take over” when you’re stressed, anxious, or completely shut down? You might feel on edge, unable to relax, or even numb and disconnected. This isn’t just “in your head”, it’s your nervous system doing its best to protect you.
One of the most powerful tools we use at Deepen Wellness in Atlanta, GA, to help clients understand what’s happening inside their bodies is the Polyvagal Flip Chart, developed by Deb Dana. This tool maps out what’s happening in our nervous system and explains why it can feel so hard to return to a calm, connected state when life feels overwhelming.

The Three States of the Nervous System
1. Ventral Vagal State (The Green Zone)
This is where we feel safe, calm, connected, and joyful. In this state, our bodies allow us to engage with others, think clearly, and feel grounded. It’s where healing and connection thrive.
2. Sympathetic Nervous System (The Yellow Zone)
This is our fight-or-flight mode. Here, our bodies are on high alert, releasing stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. While this state can help us respond to danger, living here too long can lead to chronic stress, burnout, and even physical health issues.
3. Dorsal Vagal Collapse (The Purple Zone)
When stress overwhelms us, our bodies may “shut down.” In this state, we might feel numb, sluggish, or disconnected from the world around us. It can feel hard to move, think, or reach out for help.
Why This Matters for Healing
When you understand your nervous system, you can better recognize what’s happening in your body during stress, anxiety, or depression. The Polyvagal Theory gives us a roadmap for moving out of shutdown and fight-or-flight and back into safety and connection.
At Deepen Wellness, we use this framework to help clients navigate challenges like eating disorders, substance use, perfectionism, and stress. By learning how your nervous system works, you can begin to shift from survival mode into a life where you feel more grounded, connected, and free.
If you’ve ever wondered why it feels so hard to stay calm when life gets stressful, you’re not alone. The good news is that your body already has the wisdom to heal, you just need the right support and tools.
At Deepen Wellness in Atlanta, GA, our therapists specialize in evidence-based approaches like RO-DBT, Polyvagal-informed therapy, and somatic techniques to help you create lasting change.
